Where the World of Orchids and New York City Collide

Jeff Leatham is a floral designer with an expansive history of creating bouquets for the stars. Vibrant colors and original designs characterize the orchid creations that Jeff installs into exhibitions for the public to see and enjoy. His approach relies on thousands of flowers and a spectrum of active colors that align in perfect harmony. The species are often rare varieties mixed with more common ones everyone knows.

What is the New York City Orchid Show?

At this year’s New York City Orchid Show at the New York City Botanical Gardens, you can experience this acclaimed designer’s work firsthand. Attendees will see a display of cymbidiums, moths, and paphiopedilum as the focal point. This vast collection of orchids goes on display in spring. The Venus slipper, for example, has the look of a flycatcher as well as that of a maid’s gown. Dendrobium has over 1,800 species that grow from a pseudobulb. Its flowers are known for a stunning array of yellow, white, purple, green, and pink.

Real Orchids at the Botanical Garden

New York’s botanical garden is an educational institution with “living exhibitions.” This location is the largest of its kind in any US city. The center’s daily collection spreads out through both out and indoor gardens. Its facility hosts a quiet pond with wild lilies and tamed hedges. You can visit every day of the week except on Mondays. The compound was built in the style of Victorian architecture. Glass and an arching ceiling are what give the indoor space versatility.

The Only Orchid Show of its Kind in New York City

Jeff Leatham’s Kaleidoscope show is a premier exhibit for the New York City Botanical Gardens. From February 15, 2020, to April 19, 2020, residents, visitors, and international travelers have access to this show. Last year’s production resulted in never-seen-before artwork that put a variety of orchid species into expressive collages. You won’t want to miss this season’s event, which promises to be the best yet.

Description

Some orchids are displayed as solo pieces, while others are bunched in groups. Since many species don’t grow their roots into the ground, some of the artistic expressions are entirely suspended in the air. Other floral works are at eye level—where you’ll get to see the real texture and character of each plant. The imagination of Jeff Leatham’s team is guided by wild shapes to form each flower around.

Pricing

You can find tickets to the orchid show at the New York City Botanical Gardens for $23 a person. Seniors get a reduction of three dollars, which is the same as the deal students get through a valid ID. As long as your children are under 2 years old, they have free admissions. They are considered adults after 12 years old. Members who are registered at the garden don’t pay. Ticket packets for the event come in groups of three, four, five, and seven.

Bonus Events—Other Great Things to See

The New York City Botanical Gardens is also hosting a train show, which sends a locomotive model into a garden of plants and props. Active members get access to conservation projects within the compound and in real-outdoor habitats. Family events consist of the Drop-In Gardening project, for example. This one allows children to help plant, water, and nurse botanical exhibits. Other activities are camps and nature explorations.

Find a Place to Stay

Make a weekend of it and find a comfortable and convenient place to stay. Here’s one tip for slightly more adventurous travelers to New York City: it’s often cheaper and more convenient to stay in Jersey City, NJ. Just across the Hudson River, it’s closer to many Manhattan attractions than staying uptown.

Take a look at the many quality hotels in Jersey City. The Hyatt House Jersey City is one popular option. This Jersey City hotel offers stunning views of New York City from many rooms and the rooftop deck or its two on-site dining options, the Terrace Loung and the RoofTop at Exchange Place. Candlewood Suites Jersey City is a popular budget option. It’s situated in the heart of Jersey City’s Harborside Financial Center, giving guests a great view of the city. With comfortable rooms, on-site guest self-laundry, and free Wi-Fi, it’s a very easy option.
