posted by: Globus Cork I.. 2008-02-14 We are sorry that Ms Bell was unhappy with her installation but we are only the manufacturer. There were clear problems on her jobsite that her installer did not correct. We had several discussions with her about the jobsite problems. Ms. Bell's contractor did not correctly install the cork tiles as evidenced by the specific problems she stated. Our adhesive does not have ANY grit in it in any way. Perhaps the contractor introduced dirt or grit into the glue when stirring it (which is not necessary) or while rolling it on the floor, picking up dirt from the floor. Failure to clean the subfloor of dirt and dust by vacuuming and then damp tacking will leave dirt/dust on the subfloor. Mixing dirt into the adhesive will prevent it from working. There are 4 reasons why the adhesive can fail and they are: Insufficient adhesive coverage, Incomplete coverage, Improper drying to a dry tack before installation, and use of a sealer on the subfloor which prevents a bond. Installation errors also include failure to hit the tiles with a rubber mallet as directed or using instead a 100# roller after installation. Using contaminated adhesive will obviously not work. Any of these errors will prevent bonding from occurring and consequently, the edges of the tiles will lift because there is nothing holding them down. When the edges have lifted, you’re likely to break the tiles as you trip on them. They should not be walked upon in that condition. We are quite confident that the adhesive was not defective. The adhesive is produced in 250 gallon units. If the adhesive was bad, the other 249 gals would have failed also. We had no other reports of adhesive failure and have never had any report of grit in the adhesive. If anything, our adhesive sticks “too well”. That is the complaint that we occasionally receive. Tiles stick within seconds when done properly as our customers would attest. It takes a good bit of muscle to remove a tile at any time. Lastly, our cork tiles should never be sanded down as is the same as most of the cork tiles available in the US and global market. The samples sent out by Globus Cork are the same product that is cut into various tile sizes. As with most decorative cork sold for flooring, it consists of a granulated foundation cork and a differently sliced cork on the top. Decorative cork or colored cork should never be sanded down. We put a backing on the sample for labeling purposes.
posted by: Lauren B.. 2008-01-27 I ordered this product because I saw samples and loved the grain. After 4 weeks, I called to ask where the flooring was and was told it takes 4 weeks from manufacture and that it would be a few more weeks. I called back two weeks later and was told that the floor was mistakenly delivered to Louisiana (huh?). When it finally arrived, I discovered the beautiful "grain" was actually a VERY thin veneer glued to regular "bulletin board" cork. I didn't find anything on the website that would indicate this, and samples were conveniently backed with foam, so I couldn't tell. I purchased cork flooring partially because it can be refinished like wood. This "grain", however, will not survive a sanding. My installer told me after laying down three rows of planks that the glue (recommended and sold by Globus, of course) was not holding and he was worried. (Contractor is a long-time friend.) I contacted the company and was told the floor must have been dirty (it wasn't), or that the installation wasn't being done right (even though we followed the instructions to the letter). The contact cement sent by the company was gritty and runny (after stirring, etc, all the things they told us we were supposed to do) and was not holding. SPECIFICALLY, the seams were curling up. I went back and forth with "Ken" the "technical guy", and was told they can't understand what was wrong because their glue was "bombproof". Then Ken told me he was trying to arrange to have someone familiar with their product come to inspect. Of course, I never heard back. When I called back he got snippy with me. They kept telling me the floor must have been dirty, but there's no way that 180 square feet of flooring got dirty around the edges as it sat in a closed box. Not only that, I was short and had to order more, and had THE SAME PROBLEM! (Yes, I did allow it to acclimate.) The floor looks terrible and still bumps up at the seams, the product is poor and tears easily and their customer service stinks. Do yourself a favor, buy locally with trustworthy retailers and DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!
