EThe BMW Group is about to become the first manufacturer of premium automobiles to deploy a fleet of nearly 500 all electric vehicles for private use in daily traffic. Powered by a 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor and fed by a high-performance rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the vehicle will be nearly silent and emissions free.

The Mini E will have a range of about 150 miles and will initially be offered to select private and corporate customers in California, New York and New Jersey, but will first be given its world premiere at the LA Auto Show on November 19th and 20th, 2008.

As for its speed, BMW claims that it will offer acceleration to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds with a top speed that is electronically limited to 95 mph.

Editor’s Note: According to CNN.com, the new Mini E model will be able to travel 150 miles on a single charge with a top speed of 95 miles per hour. Also, for this test fleet of vehicles, BMW will reimburse customers for the cost of charging. But at a monthly cost of $850, driving the Mini E will not be cheap.  Read the full CNN article here.

Another useless “pure electric” car that will make consumers gfaint when they see the cost of the rather useless car. They will then faint a second time when they learn that the $23,000 battery pack won’t last more than 5 or 6 years.

At gas prices of $2.80 a gallon, who needs or can afford these electric cars. You have to own two cars, you know. One electric can’t meet ANYBODY’S
transportation needs. Why are yo hiding information about the high costs of owning an electric and why are you people lying about what they can do?
I know 10 people and after learning the costs of these electric cars, none of them have any desire to own one.

Your facts are not correct. A car with 240 horsepower that’s as small
as the Mini will accelerate far more equickly than 8.5 seconds to 60. My old Buick does better than that.

I love that electric cars are finally coming out and are becoming available. This sounds great at a moderate cost compared to most. Is it possible for these to be available to consumers faster? Assuming that they will be. We have been waiting for far too long for this option as it is. what are they waiting for? These need to be available ASAP!!

I’m all for electric vehicles, but why is it that none are affordable? And why is it that every electric vehicle released by a major automotive company is only available as a lease? Why are they afraid to sell them to the public?
