Fair Trade Recipe Contest
In case you don’t know, October is Fair Trade Month. If you are not familiar with the Fair Trade movement, it works to ensure greater equality in the international trade sphere by promoting fair wages and safe, healthy workplaces. You can read more about Fair Trade here.
Fair Trade is particularly active in the agriculture and food-production sectors, where it empowers farmers from all over the world to improve their environmental impact and compete successfully in the global marketplace. TransFair USA is the non-profit 3rd party organization that audits farms to ensure that the goods that you are purchasing have come from farms with safe working conditions, environmentally sustainable farming practices, and contribute to social and business development programs. Learn more about TransFair’s work here.
Fair Trade Certification is currently available in the U.S. for coffee, tea and herbs, cocoa and chocolate, fresh fruit, sugar, rice, and vanilla. Certified products and companies grow products that are healthy for you and for the world. Fair Trade products are sold in 35,000 establishments in the US.
There are many ways to support the Fair Trade industry this month like hosting a Fair Trade Event in your home, office, classroom or community. You can make a donation, you can share a Fair Trade story, or you simply make an effort to buy Fair Trade items in your local market. Whatever you choose to do, it is a great way to support a good cause and support an effort that is important to our environment.
Here at Low Impact Living we are helping to spread the word by having a Fair Trade challenge! We are challenging all of you to come up with your best Holiday recipe that MUST use at least one Fair Trade ingredient. Of course, we would prefer all the ingredients to be Fair Trade and/or Organic, but we want this challenge to be creative and fun and not feel limited.
At the end of this challenge, we will have compiled a great list of recipes for the upcoming holidays that will share with all of you! We will also be judging the recipes along with our friends at Buy Well Coffee, a Fair Trade Certified coffee manufacturer. Buy Well will also be providing a fabulous $100 gift basket for the winner.
Please submit your recipes to Shayna@lowimpactliving.com before November 17th, which will give you all just about a month to put your thinking caps on and get creative, in a Fair Trade kind of way of course… We look forward to seeing your recipes! YUM!
