It’s not only local food that is greening communities. At RAG CO-OP (Residents Apparel Gallery) in San Francisco, local clothing is being served-up to hip urbanites. The chic boutique on Octavia Street in Hayes Valley is a certified Green Business and sells clothing that is exclusively designed and manufactured in California.

All merchandise is either hand-made or produced in a fair trade factory. Buying clothing from local designer/manufacturers at RAG saves the planet in terms of shipping and energy waste, contributes to a stronger local economy and keeps your dollars out of overseas sweatshops, while paying a fair amount to local artisans.

RAG Designers

Selected designers rent shelf space at the Apparel Gallery and share a small percentage of sales with the co-op. A designer’s success at RAG is entirely based on the popularity of their merchandise, so it’s a great test of entrepreneurial skills that are necessary for success in the fashion industry.

Popular eco lines carried by RAG include:

+  Gypsy and Logic sweaters and zip-ups for men and women made from recycled fleece
+  RAG Rehab re-fashioned castaway clothing
+  Kittinhawk reworked vintage evening dresses and accessories
+  Inhabit structure jewelry made with reclaimed watch parts
+  Miranda Caroligne re-constructed sweaters that are 50% new and 50% used.

Good news for folks who live outside of San Francisco. RAG SF just opened an online store featuring approximately 30 San Francisco Area designers. The shipping may utilize less energy than your individual trip to San Francisco and you will be choosing from a selection of sweatshop-free, sustainable merchandise.
